Runners to Race Around the “High Banks’’ and “Bases’’ As Part of 20th Anniversary Walt Disney World Marathon Course
I received an e-mail from Bob Hitchcock, the PR Relations Manager for runDisney, who forwarded me an exciting press release to share with all my followers! :)
PS - As of May 7th, Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge is at 61% capacity. All others (i.e., Half Marathon, Marathon, and 5K) are currently < 50%, but you can expect that it’ll fill up to capacity well before the event.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - (May 16, 2012) - Runners in the 20th anniversary Walt Disney World Marathon in 2013 will have the unique experience of running along a speedway and through a baseball stadium - in addition to Disney’s four theme parks - as part the latest enhancements designed to celebrate the event’s two decades of existence.
The 2013 Disney Marathon course will again start at Epcot. But runners will go through the Magic Kingdom and then, for the first time ever, run through the high-banked Walt Disney World Speedway where stock cars, Indy cars and exotic supercars typically roar around the one-mile tri-oval track. And later the course will take runners to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and through the complex’s Champion Stadium, a major-league style ballpark that’s the Atlanta Braves’ annual spring training home.
“Running through the speedway and the ballpark should provide quite a thrill for the runners,’’ said veteran race director Jon Hughes. “These very creative enhancements should make for a pretty memorable 20th anniversary marathon that people will probably be talking about for 20 more years.’’
The marathon’s commemorative route changes add to the new enhancements recently announced, including enhanced entertainment along Mile 20, a specially-designed 20th anniversary Mickey Mouse medal and a new post-race party at Downtown Disney.
In addition to the 26.2-mile marathon, the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend presented by Cigna (Jan. 10-13) will feature events for the entire family such as Kids’ Races throughout the weekend, including the Mickey Mile, a Family Fun Run 5K on Friday, the Half Marathon on Saturday and the Marathon on Sunday. There is also Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge which involves running the Half Marathon and the full Marathon - 39.3 miles! The Health and Fitness Expo runs throughout the weekend at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and features the latest in running technology and fashion, as well as renowned running experts like Jeff Galloway, the official training consultant for runDisney.
Runners can register at www.rundisney.com. Runners can register early to get the best price. Below is pricing and the schedule of events for the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend presented by Cigna.

The Making of a Kona-Qualifying Ironlady
Considering my huge decision on postponing my Ironman, I needed to figure out how I would revise my future fitness goals, because a lot of what I’ve been doing the past few years has been centered around that.
Since first and foremost the goal is to handle paying off my student loans within the next 3-4 years, the goals I set for myself have are also centered around staying within a strict financial budget. (/sadface)
The Yearly Race Plan
I figure that I can still afford to do local runDisney races, so each year I’ll continue to do:
- Goofy (WDW Marathon + Half Marathon)
- Expedition Everest (5K)
- Wine & Dine Half Marathon
Since Tower of Terror is in its inaugural year, I’d like to try it out first to see if I like it or not. The Princess Half Marathon to me is a bit of an optional thing. It’s a fun race, but it shares the same race course as the WDW Half Marathon in January which makes it kinda …. mrehhhhh …. to me. Given a choice between Princess ahd the WDW Half Marathon, I would easily choose the WDW Half. Anyway, I plan to continue going Goofy each year, even though I’m not “perfectly Goofy” — I only have 2 Goofy’s under my belt.
In addition to those 3 runDisney races, assuming about ~$50-$100 for race registration, I can budget to do each year:
- 1-2 full or half marathons
- 1 sprint/oly triathlon or duathlon
I think that’s a good plan, versus what I was doing before, which was practically signing up for every distance race under the sun. >_>
The Four Year Focus Breakdown
Since I feel like I have a decent fitness base for distance, the focus now is on building speed.
As of 2011/early 2012 my current fitness base is that I know I can run a “comfortable” 9:15-9:30 min/mi pace for a marathon and I can hold about an 18 mph pace on my road bike for about 2-2.5 hours.
RunTri has a bar chart of the average times for Kona between 2002-2010, and I’m going to plan my goals around that:

- 2012 - #1 goal: continue building for speed. Make an 8:30-9 min/mi marathon pace “comfortable” (improve by ~30 sec/mi); be able to hold a 19 mph pace on a road bike for 2.5-3.5 hours; focus on swim efficiency.
- 2013 - #1 goal: qualify for the Boston Marathon. Make an 8:00-8:30 min/mi marathon pace “comfortable” (improve by ~30 sec/mi); be able to hold a 19 mph pace on a road bike for 3-4 hours; focus on swim efficiency
- 2014 - #1 goal: race a 70.3 for time. Make a 7:30-8:00 min/mi marathon pace “comfortable (improve by ~30 sec/mi); be able to hold a 19 mph pace on a road bike for 4.5-5.5 hours; focus on swim efficiency
- 2015 - #1: goal: qualify for Kona by completing an Ironman.
It’s a bit of an aggressive plan, and I’m sure it’ll be modified along the way. But, I do think that my goals are within reason.
The (Rest of) 2012 Plan
With the 7 remaining months in 2012, I’ll just continue with I have been doing thus far, which has been training with an emphasis on speed.
The biggest thing I’m proud of so far: I can hold an 8:00 min/mi for 7-8 miles now! \o/. (As in, I’m practically at the threshold for breaking into a 7:something min/mi for almost a 15K!)
I do want to do a couple of fun, active things too. The past couple months I’ve really just been in my off-season/maintenance phase and I’d like to do a couple of fun things before I really get wrapped up in my marathon season around July/August. So my 2012 goals are pretty simple:
- Do P90X2 “as directed”. Since I got P90X2 in January, I haven’t exactly been doing it with the schedule that Beachbody provided. (Tsk tsk, I know! >_>) Instead I’ve just been alternating Yoga X2 and Recovery + Mobility on Fridays as my recovery from biking and running. Between P90X, P90X2, Insanity, and Asylum, P90X2 has been the only program I haven’t done “as directed”, and I’d like to actually set aside the time to do so, else it I don’t really feel right. Anyway, with all the swimming, biking, and running I’ve been doing, it’d be nice to get back into doing a bit of weights and calisthenics.
- Continue taking dance classes. I’ve been taking dance classes with a local studio for the past few months to add some variety in my routine. Also, it’s because I’ve been really missing dancing in a studio ;_; I used to do so in high school and college, but ever since I’ve graduated I haven’t really been dancing much. I’d like to try and learn some new styles, specifically jazz and ballet. Also on this note:
- Increase flexibility. I’d really like to be able to do splits by the end of the year. It’s not sports-goal oriented as it is dance, but it also helps because I’ve been really bad with giving myself a proper stretch/cool down after I workout.
- “A” Race - Space Coast Marathon (November 2012). My time goal I’m shooting for this is a 3:45-3:59:59 marathon time (8:34-9:06 min/mi pace)
- “A” Race - WDW Marathon (even though it’s technically in 2013). I’m going to shoot for the same time goal (3:45-3:59:59), just the difference is that it’s going to be a part of Goofy, where I’d have run a half marathon the day before.
- Hold a 19 mph pace on my road bike for 2.5-3.5 hours. Pretty self explanatory. I figure this goal coincides well as cross training while I’m in marathon season.
Pardon the long post! But having everything laid out definitely makes me feel like I can “see” things more clearly, and I also really enjoy having goals to work towards!
2012’s nowhere near over, and I’m ready to make this year happen!
It’s a Rough Week
I. Am so. TIRED.
It was a 6am - 10pm day for me, and I didn’t get home until about 10:30pm. >_<
Today is going to be another long day between now and 7:30pm or so, but tomorrow I need to get up at 4:45am to attend a 6:15am meeting.
Bah!
Just 2 more work days and then I can finally just lounge around at home and just play the Guild Wars 2 beta all weekend. (While of course getting other priorities done too.)
I was able to get a decent run in-between a 4:00 and 6:30 meeting though. Just, I forgot my Forerunner, so I ended up downloading the RunKeeper app onto my phone and running with it in my hands!

My work is within driving distance to Disney (sort of, kind of) so I went over there to get a light run in. I only really had time to do a 40 minute run on top of driving and gassing up, and getting dressed for the run and back to work attire. I know I could’ve squeezed in more mileage if I went somewhere closer, but hey - I ran there for the location of putting miles in-between Epcot and Hollywood Studios. I was just in the mood for wanting to bring some happiness to a pretty crappy work day.
I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL AFTER WORK (7PM) FRIDAY OMG.
